How to choose the ideal swim spa: complete buying guide

The swim spa has become an increasingly popular solution for homeowners who want to combine physical exercise and relaxation in a single piece of equipment. Unlike a traditional pool, the swim spa offers the ability to swim against a current in a reduced space, while enjoying the benefits of hydrotherapy.
Different types of swim spas
There are mainly two types of swim spas. The single-zone swim spa combines the swimming area and relaxation area in the same basin. The water is maintained at a compromise temperature, generally around 30-34°C. This is a more compact and economical option.
The dual-zone swim spa has two separate basins: one for swimming (maintained at 28-30°C) and one for relaxation with massage jets (maintained at 37-40°C). This configuration offers an optimal experience for each activity but requires more space and represents a larger investment.
Selection criteria
Size is the first criterion to consider. Measure the available space, allowing for a minimum clearance of 60 cm around the spa for maintenance. Swim spas range from 12 to 21 feet in length.
The power of the swimming system determines the quality of the swimming experience. Turbine systems offer a wider and more consistent current than jet systems. For an experienced swimmer, opt for a system capable of generating a current of at least 5,000 gallons per minute.
Insulation is crucial in Quebec. A well-insulated swim spa with high-density polyurethane foam and a quality cover will significantly reduce your energy costs, especially in winter.
Installation
Installing a swim spa requires a solid, level base capable of supporting the weight of the spa filled with water (which can reach 10,000 pounds). A 4-inch thick concrete slab is generally recommended. Also plan for a dedicated 240V electrical circuit with an appropriate breaker.
Budget
The price of a swim spa varies considerably depending on size, features and brand. Plan between $15,000 and $50,000 for a quality model. Don't forget to include installation, delivery and annual operating costs in your budget.
