How to prepare your spa for the Quebec winter

The Quebec winter, with temperatures that can drop below -30°C, is paradoxically the most popular season for spa use. The contrast between cold air and hot water creates an incomparable relaxation experience. However, some precautions are necessary to fully enjoy your spa safely.

Preparing your spa for the cold

Before the arrival of extreme cold, check the condition of your spa cover. A cover in good condition is your best ally for retaining heat and reducing your energy costs. At SP International, we recommend a cover with a minimum of 4 inches of insulation and a wind skirt.

Make sure all seals and closures on the cover are in good condition. A poorly fitted cover can result in significant heat loss and an increase in your electricity bill of up to 30%.

Adjusting the temperature

In winter, maintain your spa temperature between 38°C and 40°C. If you are not using your spa for a few days, lower the temperature by 2 to 3 degrees rather than turning it off completely. Heating a spa from a low temperature consumes much more energy than maintaining a constant temperature.

Protecting the plumbing

Never leave your spa without water and heating in winter. Frozen water in the pipes can cause irreparable damage. If you need to close your spa for the winter, hire a professional for a complete winterization including purging all water from the pipes.

Safety tips

Limit your sessions to 15-20 minutes in very cold weather. Keep a towel and sandals within reach near the spa. Make sure the path between your house and the spa is de-iced and safe. Stay well hydrated before and after each session.

For any questions about winter preparation for your spa, our team at SP International is available to advise you. We also offer a seasonal inspection and maintenance service.
