Understanding chemical products for your spa

Chemical maintenance of your spa is essential to maintain healthy and pleasant water. Although the variety of available products may seem intimidating, each product has a specific and complementary role in water treatment.

Sanitizers

Bromine is the most recommended sanitizer for spas. Unlike chlorine, it remains effective at high temperatures and wider pH ranges. It is also less irritating to skin and eyes. Bromine tablets dissolve slowly in a floating or integrated dispenser.

Chlorine granules are an economical alternative. It acts quickly but degrades faster in hot water. If you opt for chlorine, use stabilized dichlor specifically designed for spas.

Active oxygen (hydrogen peroxide) is a chlorine-free and bromine-free option, ideal for people with very sensitive skin. However, it requires more frequent maintenance and is generally combined with an algicide.

Balancers

pH+ and pH- allow you to adjust the pH level of your water. A pH between 7.2 and 7.8 is essential for bather comfort and sanitizer effectiveness.

Alkalinity increaser stabilizes pH and prevents fluctuations. Total alkalinity should be between 80 and 120 ppm.

Calcium hardness stabilizer protects your equipment against corrosion (water too soft) or scale deposits (water too hard).

Complementary treatments

Shock treatment (oxidizer) eliminates organic contaminants and restores sanitizer effectiveness. Perform a shock treatment after each intensive use or at least once a week.

Clarifier helps group fine suspended particles so they are captured by the filter, making the water clearer.

Filter cleaner degreases and descales filter cartridges to maintain their effectiveness. Monthly cleaning is recommended.
